Christian Bellisario

Concert:
Sunday 24 July, 18:30, Teatro Foce

A LIFE ABOVE THE LINES

It’s not easy to draw a picture of such an eclectic person as Christian Bellisario.  He simply doesn’t fit any possible definition and most probably wouldn’t like to be defined.  He’s an artist, and more precisely a musician: at least that’s what he wanted to be and wishes, day by day, to realize. He’s traveled the world following the greatest cellists of the 20th century, such as Paul Tortelier. Mstislav Rostropovich, Janos Starker, Anner Bylsma and other extraordinary musicians, like Jordi Savall, violinists Tibor Varga and Giuseppe Gaccetta; or such as Carlo Maria Giulini, who has often welcomed him into his Milan home behind the Teatro alla Scala.  These days, students from all corners of the world meet in his cello classes in Milan. They come from Germany, Switzerland, Great Britain, France, Czech Republic, Croatia, Spain, Hungary, Romania, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Australia, the United States, Iran and Italy.  He’s also a highly prized orchestra conductor and a requested historical consultant in the world of classical artistic stringed instrument making.  An untiring researcher, he published for the first time, in urtext editions, pieces such as  “The Marchenbilder”, op. 113 of Robert Schumann (Piatti/Bellisario) and the “Capricci” for solo cello of Giuseppe Dall’Abaco (The White Prince Edition) or the Sonate for solo cello op.228 of Eugene Ysaye (G. Henle Verlag), which entered immediately into the “corpus” of the principal cello repertoire and today are performed and recorded by major interpreters.  On the occasion of the Longlake music concerts (of which he is artistic director), we asked him about the criteria that guided his choices.  “I’ve attended concerts since I was a young child.  I’ve been fortunate to hear in person artists whom young people today can only hear on CDs or see in old films on youtube.  Nowadays I go to hear an artist only if I feel it’s worth it, that it’ll be an enriching experience for me, and one that I’ll therefore remember.  And so, I’m telling the truth when I say that I don’t want to miss a single one of the concerts programmed for Longlake.  There’s something for all tastes, and every artist invited is truly an artist.  And what can be said about the section called “Cello Love”, dedicated to those passionate about the cello, which brings together extraordinary people, new techniques and live performances of exceptional music?  Enjoy the Concerts!”
