Della maturità

An extremely appreciated guest at last year’s LongLake Festival, Suzanne Ramon will attend again the Festival’s Cellolove review with the pianist Jean Dubé. The rich programme of tonight’s recital features some of the finest works of the cello repertoire.
The Cello Sonata in G minor op. 65 written by Frédéric Chopin in 1846 for the cellist Auguste Franchomme, a close friend of the composer. The second, third and fourth movement of the Sonata were performed by Chopin and Franchomme at the composer’s last public concert at the Salle Pleyel on 16 February 1848.
Chopin’s Sonata will be followed by the beautiful Sonata by Claude Debussy, written in 1915 and one of the composer’s last works. Debussy intended to compose a series of “Six Sonatas for various instruments”, but managed to complete only two other works: the Sonata for violin and the Sonata for flute, viola and harp.
The Sonata n. 2 by Gabriel Fauré was written between March and November 1921: Fauré’s friend Vincent d’Indy complimented his fellow composer on the sheer ‘youthfulness' of this music: “plus the mastery of maturity. And it's so beautiful!”
The programme will be completed by the Kol Nidrei op. 47 (1881) by Max Bruch, the Chant du Ménestrel op. 71 (1900) by Alexandr Glazunov and Franz Liszt’s Mephisto valse n.1 (1859-52).
